Simplicity, minimalism, and functionality characterize the Scandinavian Style of Interior Design. Scandinavian design is full of light, airiness, space, and serenity. The main features of this type of design are open spaces full of light, decluttered interiors, clean lines, functional decor, muted colors, simple accents and the use of plants and greenery to give an earthy, lively ambiance to the décor. This type of décor does not use a lot of blankets, pillows or rugs. Any textures used are cozy and warm in addition to being stylish and ornamental. This style prefers natural fabrics like cotton, wool, and linen over synthetics and blends.
Another thing to note in this style is the attempt to maximize light whenever possible. Sheer or translucent window draperies let in as much light as possible. Scandinavians are ardent lovers of nature and believe in celebrating nature even when they are inside their homes. Hence, the use of wood in Scandinavian architecture and home décor. Pine, beech, and ash are generally the preferred wood because of their light colors.
The renovation of royal farm in Eixample, Barcelona is a prime example of Scandinavian design home. This Home Renovation joined two floors and turned it into a 300 square meter apartment in the heart of the city. Interior Designer Marta Castellano together with architects Serrat Tort has remodeled this apartment. Photography by Carlos Muntadas. Walls were removed in order to open up spaces, and rooms were relocated according to the orientation of light. The designers also restored the original oak herringbone parquet flooring and painted it white. A simple palette of colors like white, pale grey and black accents, successfully highlights the architectural merits of the apartment like the columns, the walls, floor and ceiling that celebrate the open space.
White Exposed Brick Open Kitchen
As the whole place follows the concept of no walls, all the rooms are open and share the same space. The functional open kitchen has a lot of storage places and decorations. The white brick walls, the white shelves, and cabinets contrast the dark wooden arched doors and dark curtains. Functional cabinets and open shelves give the place a modern and clean look.
Open shelves are great for ornamentation like the potted plants. The reuse of old furniture instead of throwing it away, adds character to the place. Light comes from the huge oak doors and lamps provide nighttime illumination. Finally, the parquet wooden flooring adds to the rich, old-world feel of the city.
Ancient Look Dining Room
The dining table is placed opposite the kitchen and in front of an ornate fireplace. With its moldings and ancient looks, the fireplace gives the place an old-world feel. The wooden dining table and rattan chairs are a modern style element. The pendant lantern hanging over the table is another prime example of Scandinavian love for functional and unique furnishings.
The small sitting area opposite the dining table is set for comfort and luxury. The shelf below the sofa seems like a good place to store stuff. It certainly saves a lot of space and time in case of nightly reading. The plants certainly bring life to the place.
Spacious Living Area
The creatively decorated living area looks very spacious. A large comfortable black sofa is set along the length of the room. The wooden table and bench and the various plants maintain the natural earthy look of the place.
The wood-storage space becomes an unusual solution and an eye-catcher. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide enough light and keep the room more airy and bright. The wall lamp and other decorations on the shelf behind the sofa add a bohemian look to its surroundings.
The grey sofa and black curtains contrast the white color of the walls and furniture. A soft chair by the window gives a place to relax after the day. Various beautiful lamps and art décor add a touch of comfort and luxury.
The Lounge Area
The lounge area is a most noteworthy mix of history and modern touch. The exposed brick walls and wooden floor give an old historical feeling. In contrast, the beautiful rattan pendant lamp and modern furniture including the unique wooden table give the place a modern look. Large windows give enough light to keep the place bright and airy. The wall-mounted potted plants save space, provide an earthy feel and look rather stylish. They give the place some personality and charm.
Vintage Style Home Office
A small section of the house is set for office work as well as recreational purposes. The wooden desk, lamp, and chair give it an office-like atmosphere. The wooden table set with wood colored accessories and an empty frame along with some ornamental plants are a nice contrast to the white walls and lamp. They bring some character to the simple place.
Furthermore, an interesting wooden stool set atop a round seagrass rug and a rattan swing bring an element of fun to the place. Ornamental decorations and wall lamp fill up the shelf behind the swing.
Scandinavian Design Bedroom
An artistic and unusual element of the house is the fusion of bedroom and bathroom area. It gives a certain old-fashioned charm to the décor and is quickly becoming a popular trend in international design. The placement of the bathtub near a large floor-to-ceiling window with white curtains gives privacy as well as light.
The rope curtain separating the washtub area from the bedroom is a creative and artistic touch.
The four-poster bedframe has an old-fashioned inspiration but the bed is done in simple, minimalist and contemporary fashion. Similarly, the mini tile wall behind the bed adds a trendy touch to the old-fashioned décor of the room.
